Chairman's Statement 2006
I cannot think that the day will come when our historic churches will not need financial help for repairs and maintenance.
Quite apart from the very important religious life within our churches, none of us can contemplate our urban or rural landscape without our churches, and we do accept them as an integral part of our heritage.
We therefore need year on year to increase the financial contribution from our Friends, those who take part in the cycle ride, and the charities that so generously contribute to help our work. We are very grateful for the help that is already given and in particular to the R.D. Turner Trust, Manifold, Grimley and Edward Cadbury Trusts. In addition the Manifold Trust has given us a block grant to administer and details of all these grants are shown in our accounts.
So much financial help comes from the sponsored cycle ride and we are grateful to John Colley and Helen Peberdy for organising this annual September event within this county. Special congratulations are due to the small rural community of Cotheridge who have over a period of years raised £10,000 from the ride. Some of our supporters feel that they are past riding a bicycle so we do extend our invitation to non-cyclists to participate by travelling on foot, by horse or by other methods.
I am delighted to report that Tim Bridges has agreed to join the Historic Churches Preservation Trust's liaison group for County Trusts, as he has so much to contribute. He will be representing Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Shropshire, and of course, ourselves, and will pass on ideas that are discussed within the liaison group.
I want to thank Mike Wall for the church tours that he organised in 2006 and the very interesting talks that he gives at each church that we visit. It is such a privilege to attend these events and any of our friends that do not attend are missing out on a real pleasure.
We are taking part in a trial, along with three other County Trusts, to provide input into the grant decision-making process of the Historic Churches Preservation Trust. The exercise is to simplify the HCPT grant application process and to introduce local knowledge into the equation. John Lakeman is undertaking this project in addition to administering the affairs of the trust and dealing with our grant applications. This is a lot of work for John but it does make good sense as the new scheme should save a lot of duplication of work by the HCPT, and will enable our trust to contribute our local knowledge in support of HCPT grant applications for our area.
Very considerable thanks go to John Lakeman for all his hard work and guidance over the past year, and to all members of our committee.
